Disaster Recovery Workflow
1. Retrieve the disaster recovery pfSense configuration backup:
pass grigri/pfsense.config.xml > /tmp/pfsense.config.xml
2. Reinstalling pfSense:
- Connect a null modem RS232 serial cable to the device.
- On Linux, open the serial console:
sudo picocom -b 115200 /dev/ttyUSB0
# Alternatively:
# screen /dev/ttyUSB0 115200
-
Use a pfSense USB installer image. Configure the WAN interface for PPPoE during setup.
-
WAN:
igb0
-
PPPoE credentials: stored in
pass grigri/digi_pppoe
-
If the standard installer is unavailable, download an offline ISO from PfSense old images.
- Create a bootable USB stick using Etcher.
3. Installation steps:
- Insert the USB stick into the router.
- Connect via serial console and follow the pfSense installation prompts.
4. Restore configuration:
- After installation, restore the configuration from the XML backup file.
